I'm not much of Fantasy book person but I really love Harry Potter. Also I love any book by Tamora Pierce at fantastic fantasy writer. Her series are:
Protector of the Small Quartet
Tricksters
The Song of the lioness
The immortals Quartet

Some good science fiction books are the Sliver Series here's all three...

try reading the dark is rising sequence by susan cooper. have you heard of a little thing called lord of the rings?
and an all time favourite science fiction book is definitely the hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams
